When I think of a micro-school, I think of a school that is parent-supported and life-supported rather than just academics. I wanted to homeschool my kids since my oldest was born, but after having 5 within 6 1/2 years, that wasn’t something that my mind and capacity could handle. I found a charter school whose philosophy on teaching students I agreed with.
However, I got really anxious about where my kids would go after school there, because I didn’t find a school that teaches the way that I want my children taught. I want them prepared for life, not just for college. For being an adult, not just for academics. For having the skills and ability to create and build, not just for taking tests. Between my background in psychology, watching my husband build a business, and years of thinking about how kids actually learn, I kept coming back to the same idea: I should just build it.
The micro-school I want to create looks like students spending their mornings in discussions, hands-on projects, and some real academic work, and then their afternoons learning how to actually navigate adult life, run a business, and think for themselves, while still graduating with a diploma. In the long term, the school would be grades 7-12, ranging from junior high to high school.
Right now, I’m building towards getting the school up and running for the 2028-2029 school year, offering just 7th grade to start, and then building on from that. I’m trying to research, read, and plan everything that needs to go into it, and I’ll be documenting the whole process here.
