Micro World

Alright. So, I’ve had something sitting in my notes app for a bit as an idea. I wanted to take pictures and then put little illustrations on top. I usually only take pictures of people, and I know that landscape photography follows a different settings “hierarchy” than portraits. With portraits, I set my aperture, then ISO, and then shutter speed last. I want the blur set first to give it a nice, blurry background while the subject stays in focus. With landscape, background blur isn’t really the priority. But since I wasn’t shooting true landscapes, I knew I wanted some background blur, because I was trying to create little micro worlds. I took my camera out and went in just my backyard to see what mini world I could create! I found a pile of rocks, and took some pictures:

Not bad, huh? Ha ha. These are the rock ones that I did. I have some grass, some fence, and some of a paver. But I saw it and thought that this could be a little world, or have a little illustration on top. I wanted the photography to be mine rather than using others’ images, which is why I decided to learn and take my own. I want the photography to look nice, so it would be something that you would hang up in your house. But then also, to have the photography be more of the background, where the illustration tells more about the story and really makes the images come alive. And I thought it would be interesting to have three images together that go together. Either different parts of the same thing (like the images above: where it’s the whole stack of rocks, the just a part of the stack, and then a very close up of it), or different focuses of the same composition (like a flower is in focus, and then a stem behind it, and then a leaf), so it feels like the images belong together, while still being their own.

I haven’t been able to open Procreate and draw anything, because as is the pattern and luck of me, my pencil decided to stop pairing with my iPad, so I can’t illustrate anything… yet. But as soon as I can figure that out, I’ll do a little drawing on the photo, and put it in here with a time-lapse video of it! So stay tuned for that!

When you look at the images… what micro world do you see?
